November 30, 2010- “Way” Barney

1-12 Way

“How way?  Way way.”

Episode 1, Season 12: The Wedding

“Lake No One’s Going to Drive To.”

Ted wants to invite Robin to a wedding, but trying to do so has some unforeseen consequences on the whole event.

Ted- Future Ted says that whenever he got a wedding invitation he always checked the box that he’s bringing a guest, but for the wedding in four days, he doesn’t have anyone to take.  He wants to ask Robin, but she’s dating Derek.  And then Derek and her break-up, so Ted goes to ask her to the wedding.  Robin agrees and runs off to find a dress.

Two days before the wedding Ted runs into the bride and finds out he didn’t check the plus one.  He keeps insisting he did an she says he didn’t.  Ted goes to tell Robin and after seeing her in her drop-dead-gorgeous dress, wimps out.  Lily advises him to go to the groom who tells Ted it will be fine.  When Marshall finds out he tells Ted that was a bad idea.  And then the bride calls.  Ted gets Lily to answer the phone and she finds out that Ted’s date cause a huge argument and not the wedding’s off.

Lily agrees to meet the bride at McClaren’s, where the bride is being hit on by Barney.

Marshall and Ted go to talk to the groom where Ted tells him to get married and Marshall tells him to not get married if she’s not the one.

Marshall, Ted, and the groom meet them at McClaren’s and the couple gets back together after the groom realized how much how much he loved her.  The bride finally allows him to bring Robin, only when he goes to pick her up she gets called into work.  At the wedding, Ted realizes he likes being single, and then he sees the cute girl across the room.

Lily & Marshall- This upcoming wedding adds fire to the discussion Lily and Marshall are having about their won wedding.  She wants to get married by a lake, and he wants a ballroom.  Lily keeps pushing the issue, and the two don’t get anywhere.  At the wedding Lily and Marshall agree they want crab puffs, and realize they’ve started planning.

The Mother- Obviously, the girl across the room is important, but is that really The Mother?

November 29, 2010- “Psyched” Barney

1-11 Psyched

“My own, personal, ‘get psyched’ mix.”

Season 1, Episode 11: The Limo

“So, then I said, your motorcycle was like that when I got here.”

“You’re not Moby, are you?”

“Who?”

Ted rents a limo to try and give the gang the best New Year’s Eve ever.

3 Hours ‘Til Midnight

In an effort to make New Year’s not suck, Ted rents a limo and surprises the group.  The previous years they all split up , so this year they will got to 5 parties before midnight and then pick which party they’re going to ring in the new year at.  They re-into duce Ranjit, the limo driver, who drove the taxi the night of Ted and Robin’s first date.

Robin leaves to meet up with her boyfriend, Derek, and everyone else heads to party number 1.

2 Hours, 30 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

The group leaves the first party and is joined by Marybeth, a co-worker of Ted’s who he thinks likes him, and Natalya, a Russian chick Barney picked up at the party, so the group heads to party number 2.

1 Hour, 55 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

The group leaves party number 2 (not as good as number 1) and head to number 3, accidentally leaving Natalya behind.  Robin calls that Derek has stood her up and, regardless of the fact that he’s on a date with Marybeth, Ted heads back for her.

1 Hour, 38 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

Robin joins them and everybody does their best to cheer her up, and head for hot dogs.  Lily runs back to the apartment to change her shoes and will meet them at party number 3.

1 Hour, 18 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

They get back in the limo with their food and Marshall spots Moby out the window.  They offer to give him a ride to a party he’s going to, and he invites them.  Marshall leaves to go find Lily, and the group discovers Moby is not Moby.  Not Moby leaves and Lily calls Marshall’s phone, which he left in the limo.  They then discover Not Moby’s party is party number 4.  Lily joins them, mistakenly thinking party number 4 was party number 3, and they head off to the real party number 3. and the limo gets a flat tire.

18 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

The group’s trying to stay psyched while Ranjit changes the tire.  And Marybeth leaves (because Ted’s in love with Robin).

19 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

While still waiting, Lily goes out the sunroof to call Marshall's name, while Robin gets a call from Derek.  Ted is still determined to have a perfect New Year’s, while Barney tells him the perfect New Year’s doesn’t exist.  And then Marshall yell’s Lily's name in response.  Marshall tells them he went to party number 3 and then party numbers 4 and 5 looking for them, and party number 5 is awesome.  Just then, the flat is fixed so they head out, after finding Natalya asleep in the front seat.

3 Minutes ‘Til Midnight

Ranjit tells them he can’t get them to the party by midnight and Ted pops the champagne so they can celebrate there in the limo.  Derek shows up and Ted finds himself dateless, outside the limo.  He starts to leave and Robin follows to kiss him at midnight.

The Mother- I love that this episode only takes place on the street and in the limo.  It makes it more interesting because you never notice that they never go anywhere else!  As for the storyline, I hate that they’re still beating the dead horse/Robin arc.

(Note: Sorry about the late posting!  I totally meant to get this up last night and didn’t realize I hadn’t until about 6:30 this morning.)

November 26, 2010- “Bathtub” Barney

1-10 Bathtub

“Hello…”

Season 1, Episode 10: The Pineapple Incident

“That’s the whole point of getting drunk.  You do things you’d never do in a million years if you were sober.”

“Says every girl you’ve ever slept with!”

After doing five shots, Ted can’t remember what happened the night before, and the gang has to fill him in.

Ted- Future Ted says out of all the nights he has memories of, this night is the one he can’t remember.  It starts with Carl the bartender bringing them The Red Dragon, shots he concocted.  Robin leaves early to get read for her date with a billionaire hundred millionaire.  Barney, meanwhile, gets the phone number of a girl by using the line “Daddy’s home.”  When he comes back, he tells Ted that he over thinks things and needs to “do” more.  And then they get Ted to do all five shots in quick succession.  After that, his only memories of a pineapple, and “I am Ted.  Please call [random numbers].”

When he wakes up the next morning there is a pineapple beside his bed and he has some unannounced questions like, “How much did I drink?” “How did I sprain my ankle?” “Who’s this girl in my bed?”  Marshall proceeds to tell him what happened.  First, he drunk-dialed Robin.  Then he drunk-dials her again and sings Cheap Trick’s “Voices” to her and proceeds to fall of a chair.  “Then,” Lily and Marshall say, “we brought you home and put you to bed.”  “Was there anyone else in there with me?”

Sure enough, there’s girl in Ted’s room to the amazement of Lily and Marshall, and then they discover Ted’s jacket is burned.  They call Barney to see if he knows what happened and discover him in the bathtub.  So he picks up the story.  After Lily and Marshall put Ted to bed, he showed back up at the bar.  Ted tries to call Robin and Barney sets him on fire.  “You set me on FIRE.  And who’s the girl in my bed?”  So Barney runs to see.  When checking to see if he got burned, they discover writing on Ted’s arm that says, “Hi, I’m Ted.  If lost please call [mysterious number]” and no one knows whose number it is.  So they call the number and it’s Carl, who continues the story.

Ted showed back-up at the bar, goes to throw-up, and goes to leave.  Carl writes his number on Ted’s arm in case he passes out in the gutter, and Ted proceeds to call Robin one more time.  “Yeah, this’ll go good.”  And apparently she agreed to come over “And we’ll think of something stupid to do together.”  So apparently, they…you     know… So Ted goes to talk to her and that’s when Robin calls him.  From a cab.  And after Ted tells her to come over, Trudy, the girl in the bed, comes out, and continues to story.  Trudy was at McClaren’s with her girlfriends after she got dumped.  Barney came up, hit on her friend, didn’t get anyone’s number but made one up.  They watched Ted fall off the chair and when Ted went to throw-up (but didn’t, “Vomit-free since ‘93!”) they met in the ladies room, and she gave him her number.  So when he thought he called Robin, he in fact called Trudy.

At which point Robin shows up at the apartment and Ted makes Trudy hide in the bedroom.  He apologizes for calling her and Robin tells him he’s making things confusing.  In an effort to prove he’s over her, Ted tries to show her Trudy, who has gone out the window.  Which Robin doesn’t believe.  Ted never talks to Trudy again, and they never find out where the pineapple came from.

The Mother- Okay, I’ve never been drunk.  I don’t drink, and at the most I can say is I’ve been really hyped up on sugar before and done stupid things.  But I have seen my sister drunk, and we both agree  when you’re drunk you lose your filter, so the things you say and do you mean.  Which means while Ted isn’t totally over Robin, he is a step closer because let’s face it, he slept with someone else.

November 25, 2010- “Volunteer” Barney

1-9 Volunteer

Season 1, Episode 9: Belly Full of Turkey

“What are you doing here?”

“Oh, the Lord’s work.”

“But you’re Satan.”

The gang celebrates Thanksgiving with Lily and Marshall at his parent’s house and Ted and Robin going to a homeless shelter where they get quite a shock.

Ted, Robin, & Barney- Ted and Robin decide to serve food at a homeless shelter for Thanksgiving, to “cancel out Barney” who is going to a strip club.  When they go, however, they are shocked to find Barney serving there too.  They find out that Barney volunteers there every Sunday and is something of a superstar volunteer.  While sorting food, Ted finds out that one of the volunteers takes food home.  “People donated this food thinking it was going to feed the hungry.”  “i know,.  And I’m starving.”  They find out that Barney is on probation and is serving court-mandated community service.  All because he was drunk and peed on the wall of the judge’s church.  And Barney is in fact evil.  But he is doing good, and when was the last time Ted did good?  So Ted turns in the food thief, and finds out the director does the same thing.

After giving Portobello mushrooms, that were going to be stolen, to the homeless, Ted, Barney, and Robin get “fired.”  So the three go to dinner at a strip club.  Barney tells Ted that if he wants to do something good, he can buy a homeless guy a lap dance.  So Ted does, and he reflects that what makes Thanksgiving great is the people you share it with.

Lily & Marshall- “Yeah, no, it’ll be fun.”  Lily and Marshall head to Minnesota and Marshall’s family for Thanksgiving and find out that Marshall’s family (all giants by the way) have a tradition where the boys play “bask-ice-ball” a combination of hockey and basketball, while the girls help in the kitchen.  The Eriksen women welcome Lily with a “Mrs. Eriksen” apron as a future Mrs. Eriksen, and the secret recipe for “The Eriksen Family Seven Layer Salad” with 16 cups of mayonnaise, gummy bears, and potato chips.  During casual kitchen conversation, Marshall’s mom asks Lily when they are going to have a baby.  Which leads Lily to lie and say she hasn’t thought about it, while all she can do is think about it because she’s six days late.

During dinner itself, Lily reveals that she’s keeping her name and she doesn’t want to move to Minnesota.  “We grew up just fine [in New York].  And we grew to the proper size, and then we stopped.”  Lily leaves and goes to a store to buy a pregnancy test and is then arrested for public urination after the store doesn’t have a bathroom.  When Marshall comes to et her out of jail, it comes out that she is potentially pregnant.  The two agree that they won’t be like either of their families, and they’ll make their own family.  And the cop tells them her test is negative.

The Mother- Ted is at the strip club’s buffet where a stripper introduces herself and then re-introduces herself (“Actually I”m Tracey.”) and Future Ted says, “And that’s the true story of how I met your mother.”  “WHAT!”

Which of course is him kidding.

November 24, 2010- “Maniacal” Barney

1-8 Maniacal

“Bwahahahaha!”

Season 1, Episode 8: The Duel

“It’s full of swords and video games, and kind of smells like dude.”

After Lily moves in with them, Ted and Marshall fight over who gets the apartment, while Barney makes a new dating law.

Ted, Lily, & Marshall- Future Ted starts off by saying how after all these years, the apartment they lived in at the time will always be “our apartment.”  Then we find out that Lily didn’t actually live with them at the time.  She had her own apartment.  But she and Robin stop by one day and discover it’s been turned into a Chinese restaurant.  Naturally, Ted tells her she should just move in because she practically lives there anyway.  Barney, of course, thinks this is a bad idea because when Lily and Marshall get married, then Ted is going to have to move out.  But Robin counters that Ted and Marshall have talked about who gets the apartment which brings up the fact that Ted and Marshall haven’t talked about who gets the apartment.  They keep leaving it to Future Ted and Future Marshall.  But Barney tells him that Lily and Marshall are going to start edging Ted out.  Ted goes home and everything seems fine, until he finds out they threw out Ted’s coffee maker and replaced it with Lily’s.  And they were going to replace the swords over the piano with a painting.  So Barney advises Ted to mark his territory by doing something big.  So Ted orders an English Phone booth.  Which leads to an argument and sword duel.  Which in turn leads to some pretty awesome moves and a surprisingly productive conversation.  Consequently, Marshall accidently stabs Lily.  At the hospital, Ted gives the apartment to Marshall, but when they tell Lily she tells them she doesn’t want the apartment.  It’s a boy apartment.  The group goes out to dinner and toasts, “the important stuff doesn’t change.”

Barney & Robin- Barney comes up with a “lemon law” for dates, where if in the first 5 minutes you don’t like someone, you can end the date.  Robin tries to tell him it takes longer than 5 minutes to get to know someone.  Which leads Barney to introduce Robin to a geek.  Robin is trying to have a good time with the guy, but ends up getting called to the hospital for Lily.  At the hospital, Barney tells them that earlier that evening he got “lemon law”-ed.  Which means it’s out there!

The Mother- I have no idea how this relates to The Mother.  Obviously, Ted is going to move out of that apartment one day, but how that relates to her?  No idea.

November 23, 2010- “Italics” Barney

1-5 Italics

“Because, italics, this night did not happen!”

(From Season 1, Episode 5: Okay Awesome)

Season 1, Episode 7: Matchmaker

“But it can.”

“And it has.”

“And it’s pissed!”

Ted goes to a matchmaker and finds his perfect match is already taken, while Marshall and Lily wage war on a new creature in the apartment.

Ted & Barney- After Robin does a story on ‘Love Solutions,’ a matchmaker, Barney gets Ted to go with him down there.  The owner, Ellen, promises Ted she can find him his match in three days, but Ted is skeptical.  Until he sees the math that says there are eight women, in that city of 9 million, who are compatible with him.  After five days, Ted goes back and is told there are no women out there for him.  The computer found one woman, Sarah a dermatologist, but she was matched up 6 months previously.  Ted goes to Sarah’s office and asks her out, but finds out she’s getting married that weekend.  She leaves a message on his machine, so Ted runs down hoping she’s changed her mind.  Sarah tells him his mole should be removed.  Ted tells her they should be together because their score, 9.6, is higher than her score with her fiancée, 8.5/.    But Sarah tells him that once you fall in love that 8.5 becomes a perfect 10.  So Ted goes back to Ellen who tells him he’s never going to find anyone.  Ted gives her a pep talk about how he is going to find someone and she just needs to have hope.

Lily, Marshall, & Robin- After they see a cockroach/mouse in the apartment, Lily and Marshall try to kill it with  spray and a phonebook.  But it just walks away with the phonebook.  Evidently, it had six legs and a hard exoskeleton, but tufts of fur and a tail.  “It’s a cockamouse.”  Robin is naturally skeptical, but Lily and Marshall set up to capture the creature.  They set up an elaborate trap and Marshall takes the container to a friend of his in a lab where they find it’s empty.  Meanwhile, Lily and Robin discover the thing in the apartment.  Marshall shows up, grabs it, and throws it out the window, where they discover a new aspect of the thing.  It can fly.  “Be free, mutant beast.  I’ll miss this private war of ours.  I grew to admire your tenacious- Holy mother of God!  It’s headed this way!” and it, potentially, kills itself flying into the window.

1-7 Mutant

The Mother- Okay, where the crap was Barney?  I didn’t even get a “Barney of the Day” from this episode.  As for The Mother, at least Ted’s not giving up.  And Ellen’s still looking, so there’s potential there.

November 22, 2010- “Iceman” Barney

1-6 Iceman

“Flight suit-up!”

Season 1, Episode 6: Slutty Pumpkin

“Where’s the Kit Kat?  Where’s the Kit Kat?!”

Ted continues his Halloween tradition of trying to find his dream girl, the Slutty Pumpkin, while Robin introduces Marshall and Lily to her new boyfriend.

Ted & Barney- Future Ted tells the story of how four years previously at a Halloween party on the roof, he met a girl we will call the Slutty Pumpkin, aka his dream girl, who’s number he got but lost.  So much like Linus and his Great Pumpkin, Ted goes in search of the Slutty Pumpkin every year.  This year, Barney

 1-6 Iceman

tries to get Ted to come with him to the Victoria Secret party he got them into, but Ted refuses and heads to the roof to wait for the Slutty Pumpkin.

1-6 T

Barney tries multiple times (and multiple costumes)

1-6 Devil

1-6 Penguin

to get Ted off the roof, but Ted refuses to stop hoping that the Slutty Pumpkin will come.

Lily, Marshall, & Robin- Future Ted tells his kids that while Robin is really into Halloween in the present day, she wasn’t always.    On the other hand, Marshall and Lily are very into Halloween,  (see Exhibit A)

 1-6 ML1 (Exhibit A)

dressing up as Capt. Jack Sparrow and a parrot, respectively.1-6 ML2

Robin brings Mike, the guy she’s been dating a few weeks to meet Marshall and Lily.  The four go out to dinner where it becomes apparent that Robin is not a typical girlfriend.  Robin reminds Lily that she’s not into all that couple-stuff, and Lily advises Robin that if she doesn’t meet Mike halfway she’s going to lose him.  Robin tries to share dessert with him but can’t resist trying to eat the whole thing herself.  Mike decides to leave, and point out that Robin is independent and likes to do things herself.  And so Mike breaks up with her, in front of Marshall and Lily.  Marshall and Lily win their costume party and Robin heads up to the roof.  She goes to Ted and asks him why it is she can’t be a girlfriend.  Ted tells her that the guy who will make her want to be a girlfriend is out there, she just has to have faith.  Just as his Slutty Pumpkin is out there.

The Mother- “Wouldn’t it be the coolest story ever if the Slutty Pumpkin turned out to be my future wife?”  I wonder…

And just for fun:

November 19, 2010- “Shiny” Barney

1-5 Shiny

“One of the 24 similarities between girls and fish is that they’re both attracted to shiny objects.”

Season 1, Episode 5: Okay Awesome

“This friend of mine once waited outside for 2 hours.  Couldn’t get it.”

”A friend of mine named, ‘You’?”

“No, a friend of mine named, ‘Shut Up’.”

Ted, Barney, and Robin go out to a club (and are soon joined by Lily and Marshall) and all come to realize that things they thought they knew going in, may not be completely correct.

Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall, & Lily (Because they overlap too much to split up!)- Because the owner of the exclusive club, ‘Okay’ goes to Robin’s gym and likes her, she gets on the list and invites Ted and Barney to come with.  After realizing they don’t act like grown-ups Lily and Marshall have been doing “grown-up” couple things, and host a wine-tasting party.  Marshall puts up with it for a little while but ends up going out the bathroom window to the club.  At the club, Ted tries to make conversation with Kelly, a friend Robin set him up with, but the music’s so loud they can’t hear each other.  (Leading to a hilarious conversation ‘How do you know Robin?’ ‘Sagittarius.’)  Meanwhile Robin tries to get into the VIP room, goes outside to call the owner and then can’t get back in.  Ted and Marshall meet up when Ted goes to leave (the coat-check girl’s Emma from Glee!) but Marshall convinces him to stay.  Ted really tries to get Marshall to go after Marshall gets a temporary crown knocked out, but he’s so determined to have fun he won’t go.

After getting bored at the wine party, Lily realizes Marshall’s not in the bathroom, and goes out the window after him.  She subsequently meets up with Robin who’s sitting out on the curb.  Robin realizes she ‘started acting like Julia Roberts’ just because she got recognized once.  Marshall goes in the bathroom to see if there’s a machine with aspirin and comes out a little high (details unknown to Ted).  Ted bonds with the coat-check girl (Emma!) over things that are supposed to be fun but aren’t.  (Parades, the Super bowl, parades, ‘I really hate parades.’)  And then asks her out.  Robin helps Lily realize she doesn’t have to grow-up just because everyone else is, and Lily helps Robin realize flashing the bouncer can get you into clubs (to the joy of the three dorky guys in line).  Barney’s been grinding with a hot redhead all night only to have her turn around.  He gets a shock when he realizes it’s his cousin.  (Naha!)  Ted and Barney find Lily, Marshall, and Robin and leave.

In the cab ride home Marshall confesses that he was hurt when Ted and Barney didn’t invite him on their fun night out.  Ted admits he’s much rather do couple-things but in order to do that he needs to find someone.

The Mother- This episode is so funny, but not in a super obvious way.  It’s more like you connect with the moments, which makes each scene hilarious.

November 18, 2010- “Spider” Barney

1-4 Spider

“Step into my web…”

Season 1, Episode 4: Return of the Shirt

“Told the truth.  Turns out the truth has a mean roundhouse kick.”

After re-discovering a shirt in his closet Ted decides to revisit girls he dated before to see if his second impression is better.  Meanwhile, Barney tries to get Robin to push boundaries at work.

Ted- When going through his closet, Ted finds a (slightly ugly) shirt and falls in love with it.  After re-discovering scotch Ted goes over a list of girls he dated:

Steph Made ‘adult’ films
Jackie Ran over a hitch hiker (yikes!)
Natalie Ted dumped her.  On her answering machine.  On her birthday.

Ted convinces Natalie to go out with him again (with an awesome giant sock monkey!).  Everything seems to be going great, until Ted realizes she’s not his ‘one.’  And after breaking up with her, again on her birthday, Ted learns that the Krav Maga classes Natalie is taking is not a type of yoga as he thought, but a type of guerilla-street fighting.

Barney & Robin- “Old people, babies, monkeys.  That’s not journalism.  That’s just…things in a diaper.”  Brian gets Robin to say slightly inappropriate things on-air after she realizes he was right, and she doesn’t report news that anyone listens to.

$100- “Nipple” during story on hot dog stand
$200- “I’m a dirty, dirty girl” story about death of twins on eve of 100th birthday
$1000- The Ickey Shuffle “Elbert ‘Ickey’ Woods.  The Bengals were fools to cut you in ‘91.  Your 1,525 rushing yars and your 27 touchdowns will not be forgotten.  So, Coach Dave Shula, screw you and your crappy steakhouse.”  Decided not to do it and then fell in horse crap while on camera.

I love how after everything Barney planned, the one he enjoyed the most was completely an accident.  And as Ted says, “Sometimes no matter how hard you try to do the right thing you just end up flat on your back, flailing around in a big pile of horse crap.”

Lily & Marshall- Honestly Lily and Marshall didn’t have a plot.  They were more just there to give advice and watch Robin on the news.

The Mother- I love this episode because Anne Dudek does a great job as being the slightly psycho Natalie.  And I love watching Barney play with Robin.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

November 17, 2010- “Snowsuit” Barney

1-3 Snowsuit

“It’s going to be legendary! Snowsuit-up!”

Season 1, Episode 3: Sweet Taste of Liberty

“You know what it tastes like?”

“What?”

“Freedom.”

In an effort to get out of his rut Ted tags along with Barney only to get drug off to Philadelphia where they get put in custody by security and eventually visit the Liberty Bell in a whole new way.  Lily and Robin bond and Marshall discovers he might be the jealous type.

Ted & Barney- Ted goes for a night out with Barney who takes them to the airport to pick up girls.  After finding out two cute girls are on their way to Philadelphia.  Barney and Ted catch the same plane, only to find out that the two girls are in serious relationships with Eagles Linebackers.  While on the tarmac in Philly Barney and Ted are taken into  custody by airport security for placing bags on the carousel in JFK and abandoning them.  They get released after it’s discovered the only thing in the suitcase is condoms.  And a Power Bar.  They go to a hot security girl’s house only to have it be lame, until they find out one of the guys works security at the Liberty Bell.  Barney wants to go lick it, but Ted wants to go home, and Barney admits that he can’t do these things by himself because it’s not awesome.  So Ted gives in and they end the evening by licking the Liberty Bell.

Lily & Robin- Marshall stays home to study while Lily and Robin go for drinks at McClarens, the problem being every guy there hits on Robin and doesn’t even notice Lily.  Lily, thinking it’s her ring that’s putting guys off, takes her ring off only to have the one guy who comes talk to her be gay.  Which she discovers only after having a guilt trip and coming clean about being engaged.  Lily admits to Robin she hasn’t been single in 9 years and just wanted to see if she could get someone.  Robin points out how un-fun it is to be single and that all the girls there are trying to get what Lily’s already got.

Marshall- After getting a call from Ted and Barney telling him to come to Philly, Marshall jumps in the car only to have another call telling him not to come.  But he heads for Philly after receiving a call from Barney and Ted requesting his lawyer knowledge.  But he turns back after finding out Lily took off her ring and was talking to a guy.  When he shows up at McClarens and finds the gay guy trying to get a stain out of Lily’s skirt he tries to fight the guy and ends up getting in a fight with the guy’s boyfriend.

The Mother- I love that this is the first episode where you really start to see Barney.  And while it may not be obvious how this episode leads to The Mother (I really have no idea what the point is) Future Ted says that each story is like the dot in an Impressionist painting, so I guess it will all make sense some day.

November 16, 2010- “Scoping” Barney

1-2 Scoping

“Scoping, scoping…”

Season 1, Episode 2: Purple Giraffe

“I’m gonna be a mushroom cloud of casual!”

After prematurely telling Robin he loved her, Ted tries to “ask her out by not asking her out” by throwing a party that night, only to have her not show up .  For the first two nights.

Ted- Ted tries the stalker bit and sets up a “chance” encounter with Robin while she’s reporting a kid who crawled in a claw machine after a purple giraffe.  But when he invites her to their “party” next Friday and she says she’ll be out of town, the party is bumped to that night instead.  But when she doesn’t show up Ted throws another party the next night and invites Robin again.  And then repeats it until she finally shows up.  And hits it off with a friend of theirs.  Ted finally faces up to the fact that he wasn’t Robin.  But Robin isn’t ready to get married now, or potentially ever.  But Ted can’t turn off the fact that he wants to get married.  But the two agree to try being friends.

Lily & Marshall- Poor Marshall is just trying to write his paper, but Lily keeps jumping him and Ted is throwing parties.

Barney- Barney deals with finding the one girl at the party nobody really knows and then has to figure out how to get rid of said girl when she keeps showing up at the parties.

The Mother- And so the four become five with Robin balancing them out nicely, and Ted is one step closer to getting over Robin and meeting The Mother.  All in all, not my favorite episode.  The show is still catching it’s stride, but it’ll get there.

November 15, 2010- “Lessons” Barney

1-1 Lessons

“Lesson Two, get a suit.”

Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot

“Have…you met Ted?”

In 2030 Ted Mosby tells the story of how 27 year-old Ted met the mother of his children, starting with his quest to find a wife being jump-started by the engagement of his 2 college friends.  Which will lead him to meet Robin, “the perfect girl” but Ted will screw up the relationship with a premature use of the “l-word".”

Ted- The main character of our show is telling the story to his two bored-looking teenage children of how he met their mother.  Which begins 25 years previously with the engagement of his two college friends Lily and Marshall.  While bemoaning his lack of wife to his womanizing friend Barney at the local bar, MacClarens, Ted turns around to spot her.  Robin.  Robin is a reporter for Metro News One, who “does the fluff pieces at the end of the news.  You know, like ‘monkey plays a ukulele’.”  Robin seems to be the perfect girl (perhaps the mother?) even laughing at Ted calling a blue French Horn at the restaurant a “smurf penis” and their date goes great.  Leading Ted to declare her the future Mrs. Ted Mosby.

Ted’s Perfect Woman Robin
Like dogs “I have 5 dogs.”
Likes scotch “I love a scotch that’s old enough to order it’s own scotch.”
Can quote obscure lines from Ghostbusters “Ray, when someone asks you if you’re a God, you say ‘Yes!’” (Awesome!)
Hates olives “Do you want these?  I hate olives.”

When discussing if he blew it by not kissing her at the end of their date, Ted decides that he needs to take the leap because he can’t lose her.  So after suiting up and stealing the blue French Horn he heads to Robin’s apartment (accompanied by his friends) where he’s in.

And then he blows it, Ted manages to ruin a vey “mood” moment by blurting out, “I think I’m in love with you.”  So the two go their separate ways, and Ted speculates that he’ll never see her again.

Lily & Marshall- Second year law student Marshall is planning a special proposal dinner for Kindergarten teacher Lily.  After spontaneously popping the question during a scolding from Lily about Marshall’s fear of opening the champagne, Marshall opens the bottle and hits Lily in the eye with the cork.  Their drive to the ER is entertaining and we get our first glimpse of Lily’s active tongue when it comes to sex (“Hit me?  Please!  This guy can barely spank me in bed for fun!")  Lily and Marshall spend the rest of the episode showing exactly how in love they are, with Marshall declaring that he can’t imagine the rest of his life without her.

Barney- Barney is Barney.  Our first introduction to Barney is him telling Ted he had a thing for half-Asian girls and now has a thing for Lebanese girls.  “Lebanese girls are the new half-Asian girls!” he proclaims happily.  How can you hate him for that?  He plays Ted’s wing man introducing Ted to girls with a quick, “Have you met Ted?”  Love it!

The Mother- Pilot episodes can always go one of two ways, it’s either awkward and obviously a pilot, or it’s completely awesome.  This one?  Awesome.  Barney’s character is a little under-developed but all in all the characters are fun and there.  As for Robin being The Mother?

“Because that, kids, was the true story of how I met your Aunt Robin.”
