“What are you doing here?”
“Oh, the Lord’s work.”
“But you’re Satan.”
The gang celebrates Thanksgiving with Lily and Marshall at his parent’s house and Ted and Robin going to a homeless shelter where they get quite a shock.
Ted, Robin, & Barney- Ted and Robin decide to serve food at a homeless shelter for Thanksgiving, to “cancel out Barney” who is going to a strip club. When they go, however, they are shocked to find Barney serving there too. They find out that Barney volunteers there every Sunday and is something of a superstar volunteer. While sorting food, Ted finds out that one of the volunteers takes food home. “People donated this food thinking it was going to feed the hungry.” “i know,. And I’m starving.” They find out that Barney is on probation and is serving court-mandated community service. All because he was drunk and peed on the wall of the judge’s church. And Barney is in fact evil. But he is doing good, and when was the last time Ted did good? So Ted turns in the food thief, and finds out the director does the same thing.
After giving Portobello mushrooms, that were going to be stolen, to the homeless, Ted, Barney, and Robin get “fired.” So the three go to dinner at a strip club. Barney tells Ted that if he wants to do something good, he can buy a homeless guy a lap dance. So Ted does, and he reflects that what makes Thanksgiving great is the people you share it with.
Lily & Marshall- “Yeah, no, it’ll be fun.” Lily and Marshall head to Minnesota and Marshall’s family for Thanksgiving and find out that Marshall’s family (all giants by the way) have a tradition where the boys play “bask-ice-ball” a combination of hockey and basketball, while the girls help in the kitchen. The Eriksen women welcome Lily with a “Mrs. Eriksen” apron as a future Mrs. Eriksen, and the secret recipe for “The Eriksen Family Seven Layer Salad” with 16 cups of mayonnaise, gummy bears, and potato chips. During casual kitchen conversation, Marshall’s mom asks Lily when they are going to have a baby. Which leads Lily to lie and say she hasn’t thought about it, while all she can do is think about it because she’s six days late.
During dinner itself, Lily reveals that she’s keeping her name and she doesn’t want to move to Minnesota. “We grew up just fine [in New York]. And we grew to the proper size, and then we stopped.” Lily leaves and goes to a store to buy a pregnancy test and is then arrested for public urination after the store doesn’t have a bathroom. When Marshall comes to et her out of jail, it comes out that she is potentially pregnant. The two agree that they won’t be like either of their families, and they’ll make their own family. And the cop tells them her test is negative.
The Mother- Ted is at the strip club’s buffet where a stripper introduces herself and then re-introduces herself (“Actually I”m Tracey.”) and Future Ted says, “And that’s the true story of how I met your mother.” “WHAT!”
Which of course is him kidding.
