Season 1, Episode 3: Sweet Taste of Liberty

“You know what it tastes like?”

“What?”

“Freedom.”

In an effort to get out of his rut Ted tags along with Barney only to get drug off to Philadelphia where they get put in custody by security and eventually visit the Liberty Bell in a whole new way.  Lily and Robin bond and Marshall discovers he might be the jealous type.

Ted & Barney- Ted goes for a night out with Barney who takes them to the airport to pick up girls.  After finding out two cute girls are on their way to Philadelphia.  Barney and Ted catch the same plane, only to find out that the two girls are in serious relationships with Eagles Linebackers.  While on the tarmac in Philly Barney and Ted are taken into  custody by airport security for placing bags on the carousel in JFK and abandoning them.  They get released after it’s discovered the only thing in the suitcase is condoms.  And a Power Bar.  They go to a hot security girl’s house only to have it be lame, until they find out one of the guys works security at the Liberty Bell.  Barney wants to go lick it, but Ted wants to go home, and Barney admits that he can’t do these things by himself because it’s not awesome.  So Ted gives in and they end the evening by licking the Liberty Bell.

Lily & Robin- Marshall stays home to study while Lily and Robin go for drinks at McClarens, the problem being every guy there hits on Robin and doesn’t even notice Lily.  Lily, thinking it’s her ring that’s putting guys off, takes her ring off only to have the one guy who comes talk to her be gay.  Which she discovers only after having a guilt trip and coming clean about being engaged.  Lily admits to Robin she hasn’t been single in 9 years and just wanted to see if she could get someone.  Robin points out how un-fun it is to be single and that all the girls there are trying to get what Lily’s already got.

Marshall- After getting a call from Ted and Barney telling him to come to Philly, Marshall jumps in the car only to have another call telling him not to come.  But he heads for Philly after receiving a call from Barney and Ted requesting his lawyer knowledge.  But he turns back after finding out Lily took off her ring and was talking to a guy.  When he shows up at McClarens and finds the gay guy trying to get a stain out of Lily’s skirt he tries to fight the guy and ends up getting in a fight with the guy’s boyfriend.

The Mother- I love that this is the first episode where you really start to see Barney.  And while it may not be obvious how this episode leads to The Mother (I really have no idea what the point is) Future Ted says that each story is like the dot in an Impressionist painting, so I guess it will all make sense some day.
