Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot

“Have…you met Ted?”

In 2030 Ted Mosby tells the story of how 27 year-old Ted met the mother of his children, starting with his quest to find a wife being jump-started by the engagement of his 2 college friends.  Which will lead him to meet Robin, “the perfect girl” but Ted will screw up the relationship with a premature use of the “l-word".”

Ted- The main character of our show is telling the story to his two bored-looking teenage children of how he met their mother.  Which begins 25 years previously with the engagement of his two college friends Lily and Marshall.  While bemoaning his lack of wife to his womanizing friend Barney at the local bar, MacClarens, Ted turns around to spot her.  Robin.  Robin is a reporter for Metro News One, who “does the fluff pieces at the end of the news.  You know, like ‘monkey plays a ukulele’.”  Robin seems to be the perfect girl (perhaps the mother?) even laughing at Ted calling a blue French Horn at the restaurant a “smurf penis” and their date goes great.  Leading Ted to declare her the future Mrs. Ted Mosby.

Ted’s Perfect Woman Robin
Like dogs “I have 5 dogs.”
Likes scotch “I love a scotch that’s old enough to order it’s own scotch.”
Can quote obscure lines from Ghostbusters “Ray, when someone asks you if you’re a God, you say ‘Yes!’” (Awesome!)
Hates olives “Do you want these?  I hate olives.”

When discussing if he blew it by not kissing her at the end of their date, Ted decides that he needs to take the leap because he can’t lose her.  So after suiting up and stealing the blue French Horn he heads to Robin’s apartment (accompanied by his friends) where he’s in.

And then he blows it, Ted manages to ruin a vey “mood” moment by blurting out, “I think I’m in love with you.”  So the two go their separate ways, and Ted speculates that he’ll never see her again.

Lily & Marshall- Second year law student Marshall is planning a special proposal dinner for Kindergarten teacher Lily.  After spontaneously popping the question during a scolding from Lily about Marshall’s fear of opening the champagne, Marshall opens the bottle and hits Lily in the eye with the cork.  Their drive to the ER is entertaining and we get our first glimpse of Lily’s active tongue when it comes to sex (“Hit me?  Please!  This guy can barely spank me in bed for fun!")  Lily and Marshall spend the rest of the episode showing exactly how in love they are, with Marshall declaring that he can’t imagine the rest of his life without her.

Barney- Barney is Barney.  Our first introduction to Barney is him telling Ted he had a thing for half-Asian girls and now has a thing for Lebanese girls.  “Lebanese girls are the new half-Asian girls!” he proclaims happily.  How can you hate him for that?  He plays Ted’s wing man introducing Ted to girls with a quick, “Have you met Ted?”  Love it!

The Mother- Pilot episodes can always go one of two ways, it’s either awkward and obviously a pilot, or it’s completely awesome.  This one?  Awesome.  Barney’s character is a little under-developed but all in all the characters are fun and there.  As for Robin being The Mother?

“Because that, kids, was the true story of how I met your Aunt Robin.”
